DAR ES SALAAM: THE Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Cultural Competitions concluded on a high note on Friday night, marking the end of a vibrant two-week celebration of talent and camaraderie.
But beyond the song and dance, a more serious issue emerged from the colourful setting of Msasani Beach Club in Dar es Salaam.
The Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) announced its readiness to step up and help address Tanzania’s struggles on the international sports stage.
In a passionate speech, General Jacob John Mkunda, the CDF, expressed concern over the nation’s continued lacklustre performances in global competitions, particularly highlighting the recent disappointing show at the Summer Olympics in Paris.
General Mkunda’s candid remarks reflected a deepseated frustration shared by many Tanzanians—why has a country so rich in spirit and potential continued to face a medal drought spanning half a century?
The General’s proposed solution? A military intervention of a different kind: searching for hidden sports talents across the country and nurturing them to shine on the world stage.
His is a call to action that finds resonance in the hearts of Tanzanians who yearn to see their flag hoisted in victory on international podiums. Deputy Minister for Culture, Arts and Sports, Hamisi Mwinjuma, expressed his gratitude for the TPDF’s offer.
He acknowledged the army’s reputation for discipline and capability, qualities that could prove pivotal in reversing the country’s sports fortunes.
With the TPDF’s support Mwinjuma envisions a new era of collaboration aimed at reclaiming Tanzania’s glory in the sports arena.

Tanzania had sent a team of seven athletes to the Paris 2024 Olympics, including marathon runners, swimmers and a judoka. However, despite their efforts, the team returned home without a single medal.
The Deputy Minister said TPDF’s pledge to step in offers a glimmer of hope, sparking the possibility of a brighter future where Tanzanian athletes can proudly bring home the accolades they so deserve.
