Dar es Salaam, 14 June 2025 — Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania, in partnership with Nipe Fagio, successfully conducted its annual employee volunteering beach clean-up on Saturday, 14 June 2025, at Rungwe Beach in Dar es Salaam. The event, which drew the participation of over 70 bank staff and their family members, was held in honour of World Environment Day and as part of the Bank’s broader sustainability agenda.
The beach clean-up is a flagship environmental volunteering initiative by Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania, carried out annually for the past several years in collaboration with Nipe Fagio. Each year, the Bank selects a different beach to clean, reaffirming its commitment to promoting environmental stewardship and community engagement.
The event aligns with Standard Chartered Group’s sustainability agenda, which is centred around three pillars: Sustainable Finance , Responsible Company , and Inclusive Communities . Locally, the beach clean-up is part of the Bank’s “Here for Good” brand promise, aiming to reduce environmental impact, raise awareness on plastic pollution, and empower communities to act in preserving natural ecosystems.
Over the past years, Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania has consistently championed sustainability through various initiatives, including transitioning to energy-efficient office solutions, implementing waste reduction strategies, and supporting financial inclusion projects that uplift communities. The Bank has also invested in staff engagement programmes that promote climate awareness and responsible living.
This year’s clean-up at Rungwe Beach resulted in the removal of significant plastic and non-biodegradable waste. Colleagues collected close to 100 bags of waste, amounting to approximately 1 tonne of waste removed from Rungwe Beach shoreline, contributing to the health of Dar es Salaam’s coastal ecosystem, and reinforcing the Bank’s commitment to environmental preservation. This figure, while a notable achievement, also serves as a stark reminder of the urgent and ongoing need for sustained action.
Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania remains dedicated to being a force for good, embedding sustainability into its core operations, and supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals)
